How to prepare for MAH CET 2020: Logical Reasoning Section

The Logical Reasoning section is designed to test one's decision-making abilities, problem-solving and how logically one reaches a solution. This section consists of the maximum number of questions in the MAH CET i.e. 75. To get a good score, one can attempt a total of 60-65 questions with an aim of 42-44 correct attempts.

Section Difficulty Level Good attempts
Logical Reasoning Moderate to Difficult 42-44

So what topics does one need to prepare to hit the set target? The MAH CET Logical Reasoning section questions are based on topics -series, statements – inferences/conclusions, true-false, coding-decoding among others. From these topics questions on various types of Arrangements, statements, letter rearrangements, family tree have regularly been asked in the previous years of the MAH CET exam. The following table will give you an idea about which topics most questions are asked from and their difficulty level.

Question topics Number of questions Difficulty level
Arrangements-Linear, Matrix, Square etc. 28 Moderate
Syllogism 7 Difficult
Direction 5 Moderate
Family tree-blood relationship 4 Moderate
Statement-conclusion, inference, cause-effect   6 Moderate to difficult
Critical reasoning 15 Moderate
Assumption   4 Moderate
Data sufficiency 4 Moderate to difficult

Note: strategise your time and prepare the topics that have higher weightage. This will help you get a high score despite the time crunch.  In previous year papers, questions have been asked from some topics more than others. The topics from which maximum questions are asked in the MAH MBA CET are given below,

Topics to focus on

  1. Blood relation
  2. seating arrangement/ arrangement problems
  3. Critical Reasoning & Verbal reasoning
  4. A syllogism with a possible case
  5. Coded inequalities

Since this is not the only section we need to prepare for, let us just focus on three main topics based on the weightage of questions asked and the tips to crack the difficult logical section.

Critical Reasoning:  is a way of thinking in which you don't simply accept all arguments and conclusions you are exposed to but rather have an attitude involving questioning such arguments and conclusions. The types of questions based on critical reasoning are strengthening/ weakening the argument, strengthening/ weakening the conclusion and finding the assumption. Keep in mind:
  1. Your critical thinking bases your decision making on facts, information etc.
  2. Break the given passage into smaller parts, from that get the conclusion, facts and assumptions.
  3. Re-phrase and try to make the language simpler.
Arrangement: In this type of questions, the problem is essentially of arranging a group of people, objects etc. according to the given specifications.  Keep in mind:
  1. Draw a diagram(circle/rectangle/square) according to the information specified
  2. Also, make note of the indirect information given.
  3. Identify the number of parameters or variables given in the question.
Syllogism:  In logic, syllogism aims at identifying the general truths in a particular situation.  a form of logical reasoning that joins two or more premises that are assumed to be true to arrive at a conclusion. Keep in mind:
  1. Make a note of the information that is being assumed.
  2. a re-statement is not a conclusion
  3. the conclusion has to be different from

Last-MinuteTips & Preparation Strategy for Logical Reasoning Section

How you prepare for the MAH MBA CET 2020 logical reasoning sections above all depends on the type of questions you practice and the topics you choose. Hence, schedule your tests on 2-3 topics and take sectional mock tests regularly.

  1. Don't Stress: like other management entrance exams, the MAH CET is an entrance exam designed to examine your general aptitude and abilities.
  2. Revise the topics you are confident in. This will help you achieve the 42-44 good attempts mark.
  3. Visualise the problem in your head. Draw a rough diagram, grids or tables based on the information given.
  4. In Data Analysis questions, it is useful to eliminate not possible answer choices to help with the elimination process.
  5. Read carefully: Read the entire problem or situation carefully as sometimes in a hurry we might miss some important points.
  6. You should focus on one topic at a time, even though there might seem to be an overlap of topics, go one by one.

Since the topics of Logical Reasoning and Abstract Reasoning are similar. Read on for the Abstract Reasoning section focus topics and preparation tips.

How to prepare for MAH CET 2020: Abstract Reasoning Section

Abstract Reasoning section constitutes 25 questions of moderate difficulty. This section of Abstract Reasoning is designed to check the candidate's abilities to interpret patterns, sequences, relations and shapes at a complex level.   Most questions in Abstract Reasoning are similar to logical reasoning questions, but with a more abstract base. If you can focus and devote some time towards preparing for this section, it can help you ensure a good score.

Total questions 25
Marks per question 1
Answer options per question 5
Total marks 25
Difficulty level Moderate
Good Attempts 18-20

To achieve the target of 18-20 good attempts you can focus on specific concepts and topics, building a strong base in them.

Topics to Focus on:

  1. Analogy
  2. Series
  3. Odd one/man out
  4. Puzzles

Due to the very little time in hand, let us focus just on the Analogy and Series topics as they have been the main topicsMaharashtra CET has focussed in previous years.  Analogy & Series: In this category, you would be given figures or number patterns and you have to find the next figure in the series. Analogy means 'similar'. Keep in mind:

  1. Find the pattern. There is always a pattern in the series and analogy kind of questions and that is the key to solving these questions.
  2. try to find the similarity or connect between the figures
  3. Think out of the box, do not restrict yourself to just a particular way of finding the pattern, think in every way possible.

Last-minute Tips & Preparation Strategy

  1. Break a complex pattern down and avoid distractions.
  2. Begin solving a question with the END in mind
  3. Solve it with a cool head
  4. Practice & practice some more
  5. Manage your time with care
  6. Boost your spacial awareness through questions beforehand. There are videos online that will help you build these skills if you spend some time practising.

It is noteworthy, that questions in the Abstract Reasoning section were found on the easier side as reported by the test takers.
