While students are accustomed to marks, grades, and percentages, they find it difficult to understand percentiles and rankings. The National Testing Agency releases JEE Main percentile scores and All India Ranks for JEE Main exams. The NTA uses normalisation to convert the actual marks to percentile scores. In this article, we will talk about JEE Mains marks vs percentile vs ranks to help you understand the difference and determine your rank using percentile and marks.
The National Testing Agency has explained the normalisation process used to convert JEE Mains marks to percentile scores. This process helps remove any disparity in scores due to varying difficulty levels of question papers since the exam is held on multiple days in several shifts. In this article, we will talk about JEE Main percentile vs ranks vs marks to help you understand the difference better. So, if you are confused between percentiles, marks and rank in JEE Mains, here are some tips to help you calculate rank using marks and percentiles in JEE Mains. Before you go ahead, please remember that the JEE Mains marks vs rank vs percentile provided here can help you estimate your score.
Many students looking for a BTech degree from a reputed college take the JEE Mains Exam. Many students ask does board marks matter in JEE? While earlier they were not considered, as per the current regulation, 40% weightage is given to board marks while calculating the All India Rank. If you are planning to take the exam, then make sure you follow JEE Main preparation tips offered by experts to put your best foot forward.
Why is the JEE Mains Result Declared in Percentiles?
Thousands of candidates take the JEE Mains every year. Hence, the exam is conducted over 56 days with two shifts every day to accommodate all candidates. The papers are not the same across all days, and it is possible that the papers are simpler on some days compared to others. This disparity can be unfair to some candidates. Hence, the NTA normalises the scores. This means that every candidate receives a comparative score calculated using a formula, and it is called a percentile.
Normalisation Formula
Once the NTA compiles the raw marks, it uses the normalisation formula to calculate the percentile score for each candidate for each subject. The percentile scores are used to determine ranks and create the JEE Mains merit list. The NTA calculates the percentile scores up to seven decimal places to avoid ties.
The NTA uses normalisation to calculate percentile scores that indicate the percentage of candidates that have scores equal to or less than a particular percentile. It is measured on a scale of 0 to 100 for each session. Here is the formula to calculate JEE Main percentile:
Total Percentile=Number of candidates from the session with scores less than or equal to T1 score Total number of aspirants who have appeared in the session
Where, T1 = Total Score
Mathematics Percentile=Number of candidates from the session with scores less than or equal to M1 score in Mathematics Total number of aspirants who have appeared in the session
Where, M1 = Mathematics score
Physics Percentile=Number of candidates from the session with scores less than or equal to P1 score in Physics Total number of aspirants who have appeared in the session
Where, P1 = Physics Score
Chemistry Percentile=Number of candidates from the session with scores less than or equal to C1 score in Chemistry Total number of aspirants who have appeared in the session
Where, C1 = Chemistry Score

TieBreaker Guidelines
If two or more candidates get the same percentile score at the JEE Mains, then the merit is determined as per the following rules:
The candidate with a higher percentile Mathematics score is ranked higher.
If the Mathematics scores are tied too, then the Physics percentile scores are compared. The candidate with the higher score is ranked higher.
If the Mathematics and Physics percentile scores are tied too, then the candidate with a higher Chemistry percentile score is ranked higher.
If all the scores are tied, then the candidate older in age is ranked higher.
To Conclude
The results for JEE Main 2022 will be declared separately for June and July sessions. If a candidate appears in both sessions, then the best score of the two will be considered for the merit list and ranks. If you appeared for the exam, we suggest you prepare a list of preferred colleges. It will help during the counselling process.
