What Is Valentine’s Day And Why Do We Celebrate It

Usually, when the word “Valentine” comes into a conversation, people think of love, romance, and compassion. But the origin of this particular day isn’t that romantic. In fact, it was more of a religious ceremony instead of a celebration of love.

Valentine’s day, also known as Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, was an annual Christian feast that was organized to honour an early Christian martyr Saint Valentine. Although, later the world turned to this day of celebrating romance and love.

There is also plenty of stories and folklore about Valentine’s connection to Feb 14. For instance, one story talks about a Roman Priest who was in jail during 269 A.D. He was set to be executed but before his last day, he wrote a love letter to a woman who used to visit him frequently in jail. The letter was signed "From your Valentine," and from then on, it has been considered the very first Valentine's Day card in history.

Another story recounts a saint named Valentine who would perform weddings for Christian soldiers who were forbidden to marry by the Roman Emperor Claudius II. And when the Emperor discovered that the priest violated his order by secretly marrying the soldiers, he ordered his execution.

Many such stories are connected with February 14 and the celebration of Valentine’s Day but over the years, what has become the major theme is love. Now, with the rise of the internet and commercialization, Valentine’s Day has become a major day, not just among couples but singles too. People send cards, gifts, chocolates to their close friends to show their love and affection.

And this is also the time when people look at famous couples who have ended up together after years of relationship. This inspires young millennials to have faith in romance and strive for making their love story.
